Stop it.

General Conference was last month and I've been listening to the podcast of it while making dinner.  President Urchtdorf gave a beautiful talk that I can't stop thinking about and pondering about. Here's the basics of the talk:

"This topic of judging others could actually be taught in a two-word sermon. When it comes to hating, gossiping, ignoring, ridiculing, holding grudges, or wanting to cause harm, please apply the following:

Stop it!

It’s that simple. We simply have to stop judging others and replace judgmental thoughts and feelings with a heart full of love for God and His children. God is our Father. We are His children. We are all brothers and sisters. I don’t know exactly how to articulate this point of not judging others with sufficient eloquence, passion, and persuasion to make it stick. I can quote scripture, I can try to expound doctrine, and I will even quote a bumper sticker I recently saw. It was attached to the back of a car whose driver appeared to be a little rough around the edges, but the words on the sticker taught an insightful lesson. It read, “Don’t judge me because I sin differently than you.”

I've just been thinking about how quickly and often I judge others without knowing them, or gossip about others (even if it's true, it's not right), or become overly jealous with other people's success. I don't want to do this anymore.

So, what do I do about this? I've made a resolution. Whenever I have a mean thought about someone else or the jealous green monster comes out or I just can't get over something and want to hold a grudge, I'll just stop. I'll replace that thought with a positive one.

I've put this into practice this last week and it's really been a blessing. I'm starting to see people in a new light. I've always seen a beauty in each individual, but that beauty has just increased. I know that each person has their own story, their own personal struggles, and that most people are just going through this life the best they can. I'm going to try to lighten the load by being a positive re-enforcement.

No one wants to be talked about, ridiculed, ignored, hated... we're all here striving for someone to love us.

So here's my resolution to love instead. Who's in?

ps; here's a really cute poster if you want the quote... it's even free! woop woop!

  1. Oh MAN I love this talk. Uchtdorf has got some good ones, eh? I've actually been feeling a bit more jealous more than gossipy/ judgmental these days. Now that it's summer I really wanna go on more trips and a vacation, but I just don't have the means, ya know? So I get jealous of those that are able to get out of town often. I'm saving money to go on a trip maybe near the end of summer, but now I have the problem of deciding where to go. Ah.

Heh, sorry for that ramble. Anyway, thanks for posting this! It's a great reminder :)

  7. i need to go back through and read/listen to them again. thanks for the reminder! i love how you did more than listen, you acted. that's the whole point of conference talks - to get us to not only remember and resolute to do better, but to actually become better and closer to god.
